    Shopping for auto insurance

June 9th, 2007 by Thinkbox Web

Shopping for car insurance can be a nightmare and with hundreds of auto insurance companies out there, how do you know which one is the best for you? A lot of consumers simply grab the first quote they receive and don’t bother doing the extra research that could potentially bring costs down.

A couple of years ago, I got into a big accident that pretty much totaled my car. I called my insurance company to figure out what they can do for me. Long story short, they were not able to help me much as my insurance plan was one of the smallest that covered only a fifth of the damages. I was furious as I felt I was paying a lot of money ($3000/yr) for a coverage that was nonexistent. I had been with them for 5 years before the accident so I did not bother shopping around. Boy, was I foolish.

After learning my lesson, I started looking at coverage plans more carefully and started to compare notes with other insurance providers. After a couple days of shopping around, I was able to find a reputable insurance provider with a much better plan for the same price! If I had been with these guys from the beginning, the coverage would have paid for a brand new car and then some.

If you are stuck in a bad coverage with your current carrier, do what I did and make a few phone calls. It really pays to shop around.
